"We will gradually become indifferent to what goes on in the minds of other people when we acquire a knowledge of the superficial nature of their thoughts , the narrowness of their views and of the number of their errors. Whoever attaches a lot of value to the opinions of others pays them too much honor." - Arthur Schopenhauer

False sense of urgency
"We've fallen into this false sense of urgency that they create. That idea that everything is breaking news and that if you're not watching us, you're going to miss this thing. But nothing they're saying is of any import because nobody filters it. Print reporters are able to step back for a moment and think. They're not. They're just pointing a camera and saying, 'What do you think that is? I don't know. Let's go to 'The Situation Room.' " - Jon Stewart

"It is often forgotten that democracy, defined chiefly by elections and the exercise of power in the name of majority, can be as repressive of individual freedom and minority rights as dictatorship – sometimes more so"
- John Gray (Oxford, London School of Economics and Politics, Harvard, Yale)

The reason why is that majorities in "democracies" are a controllable and lazy herd, proverbial sheep led by wolves. Which essentially makes democracy a sham, a system slightly more refined and sophisticated than dictatorship, but not too different from it in terms of governance. The choice of one in a dictatorship is replaced with a choice of 2 (or occasionally 3) in a democracy. The coercive apparatus of dictatorship is replaced with mainstream media whose role is to divert people's attention from, or misinform them about, important issues. When establishment media fail, the coercive apparatus is promptly dispatched.
The difference between democracy and dictatorship is thus only illusory.
